Best Rated Waterproof Cameras

Waterproof cameras in their present form entered the market in 2002. Before that you need to buy a bulky and expensive exterior case to keep your camera safe and dry. The really good news is that the new generation of rugged cameras all pretty much sport the same features as their non-waterproof counterparts.

If you spend a lot of time out of doors hiking, swimming or camping then one of these rugged little beauties is for you. Below is a summary of two of the best waterproof cameras available. Both of these cameras are worth your attention if you in the market for a instrument that can take the heat and keep coming back for more.

 Panasonic Lumix TS1

Panasonic LumixAre you looking for a camera that beautifully blends durability and style? Then the TS1 is for you. The camera is both Hi-quality and sturdy, being able to withstand whatever your family vacation can throw at it. The back of the camera features a large 2.7” LCD display screen and a large red button that enables you to start recording in HD movie mode regardless of what mode you were presently in. This feature alone scores high marks for common sense in my opinion.

Other features include a 12.1 megapixel sensor, the ability to be dropped from 5 feet and not suffer any ill effects, submersion in water to depths as great as 10 feet and a 4X internal zoom lens. Even though the TS1 can be dropped from a pretty good height please remember that nothing is indestructible and you may one day want to submerge the camera and this just won’t do with a damaged seal.

The Lumix TS1 will make a great addition to your next family outing or vacation, whether it will be to the mountains or the beach. The camera also comes in three colors, silver, green and bright orange making it one of the hardest to lose cameras available. This is a big plus for anyone planning to spend time in the great outdoors.

Pentax Optio W80

Pentax Optio W80Like the Lumix TS1 the W80 is a do it all camera that can be submerged in up to 10 feet of water, frozen to 14 degrees F, dropped from 3 plus feet and not suffer in the least from any of the experiences.

The W80 sports a 12 megapixel sensor with a 5X internal zoom lens, giving an effective focal range of 28-140 mm. On the rear of the camera you’ll find a 2.5” LCD display and relatively few controls testifying to the simplicity of design. Fast face detection is also part of the many features provided; enabling the W80 to recognize up to 32 faces in .03 seconds with smile capture and blink detection thrown in for good measure.

Also part of the W80 is HD movie mode making it possible to record in resolutions up to 1280×720 pixels at 30 frames per second. One really nice added feature is the ability to switch to Underwater Movie Mode and have all the cameras functions fully optimized for that condition. Great for snorkeling along a reef or exploring a lake.

The two cameras you presented here are both great, and the user reviews for them are positive (as I have seen on top shopping sites).

One thing though, I expected to see the canon D10 here too, as that one is, in my opinion (and a lot of others) one of the top waterproof digital cameras.

I really like the Panasonic Lumix TS1. I would probably buy the silver one but the orange colored one is growing on my every time I look at your picture. I was on a vacation camping and it rained tike crazy and destroyed my digital camera so I want to get a waterproof one for such occasions. Thanks for the info.

I actually own an Olympus waterproof camera. It’s been great so far. But I’ve also read great reviews on both cameras featured in this article.

The pentax looks great. How the modern camera do that blink detection stuff is beyond me… it’s pretty amazing. The amount of photos I have from the past that have been ruined by the blink is phenomenal.
